Studio Technique

Our next session of instructed courses begins the week of January 9, 2012. SPACE IS LIMITED. Due to popular demand, registration (confirmed with payment) is highly recommended as soon as possible. Please see our Schedule for the Winter 2012 session.

* Please Note: The animation and portfolio classes will involve weekly assignments. Students must provide their own materials. Enrolled students will receive information as to what is needed.

Each course is over a span of 10 weeks.

Animation 1: Focuses on Disney Animation Principles. Strong emphasis on understanding the fundamentals and physics of animation and how they apply to more complicated scenes. Students will also learn how to properly approach and plan their scenes.

Animation 2: Focuses on character animation. Excercises involve character animation and physics. Bringing life to characters and introducing personality and acting. Strong emphasis on scene planning.

Animation 3: Advanced character animation. Focus on staging, performance and acting.

*Note: Students need to have the means to do their animation work at home. Students must have access to a lightbox, animation disc, pegbar, animation paper, or equivalent equipment. Doing assignments in 3D software is optional but not encouraged, as it is important to have a strong grasp on visual principles which are best developed outside of the software. Please contact Studio Technique for more information.

Character Design 1: The character design class provides an understanding on how to create unique character designs, as well as understanding their diverse personalities and how to portray them visually. Students will also learn to take character concepts to a final production design.

Character Design 2: Discovering personality and bringing life to a developed character design. Strong emphasis on 3-Dimensional drawing, as well as expressions and posing.

Layout 1: Understanding layout and background design for animation. Focus on advanced perspective drawing and composition.

Layout 2: Understanding layout and background design for animation. Emphasis on feature film layouts, interior and exterior shots, tonal studies and advanced perspective.

Storyboard: Covers the fundamentals of storyboarding for live action and animation. The course also touches upon visual storytelling and how it applies to video games, feature films, television, comics and graphic novels.

Admission to level 2 and 3 courses (Animation 2 and 3, Character Design 2 and Layout 2) requires a portfolio of completed assignments from the previous level, updated with the feedback provided in class. No exceptions.

All new artists in Animation must start with Level 1 classes. An exception may be made for direct entry into Animation 2 by professional animators who provide a demo reel (online or QuickTime) and arrange a 15 minute evaluation session ($50) with Samantha at least 4 weeks prior to the first class to determine if the arrangement is suitable. The evaluation cost is additional to the cost of the course, and does not promise that you will qualify for entry. Please note: Due to the content covered in Animation 1, which follows Disney traditions in feature animation, participation at this level is highly recommended.
